Objectives
- To teach Paediatrics, general or subspecialties, at the Integrated Master's Degree, Master's Degree and Doctoral Degree levels.
- To maintain and improve basic and clinical research in different paediatrics areas, through research projects, some with financial support from national or international entities.
- To provide paediatric health care to the population, through the clinical work of collaborators, in the Integrated Paediatric Hospital of São João Medical Centre.

Most researchers are involved in the Cardiovascular Research and Development Unit.
Facilities
The activities of the Paediatric Department are mostly developed inside the facilities of the Integrated Paediatric Hospital, at São João Medical Centre.
Autonomy
- The Paediatric Department has autonomy to manage the human, material and financial resources given by the Faculty of Medicine of Porto University, and its own resources, as well, according the statutes of the Faculty.
- Resources of the Paediatric Department:
- The budget allocations from FMUP;
- Those provided by the rights of intellectual or industrial property;
- Income resulting from own property or which it benefits from;
- Those ones from selling publications;
- The product resulting from the sale of goods, when permitted by law and by the FMUP director, as well as any other patrimonial elements namely those that have no use or are expendable/not needed;
- Subsides, subventions; grants, donations, inheritances and legacies;
- The credir of the management account from the previous years;
- Any other that may legally be raised.
